What is Discipline?
When was the last time you asked yourself if you were disciplined? What does that even mean? It simple means willing to obey or more able to control themselves, often in the form of rules, and punishments if these are broken, or the behaviour produced by this training. So what is Self-Disciplined? The ability to make yourself do things you know you should do even when you do not want to.
Here are 4 simple tips to improve discipline while training and getting the results you deserve
- Remove Temptation
Self-control is often easiest when abiding by the old saying, "out of sight, out of mind." Removing all temptations and distractions from your environment is a crucial first step when working to improve your self-discipline. If you are trying to have better control of your eating, remove the junk food. If you want to improve your focus while working, turn off your phone and remove the clutter from your desk or even social media
- Have a plan
Don't wait till you feel like it or not in the in the mood. It's the same thing as procrastinating we put off exercise for many reason, usually because it's hard and we'd rather do something easier. But I look at it as something I need to do to take care of myself, like eating healthy food and exercise similarly, tell yourself you're going to do a workout/run at a certain time, and then show up.
Do it even if you're tired or feeling lazy. You'll find that you feel great for having done it, self-accomplishment. Either way, you'll start to master doing things that are uncomfortable.
- Reward yourself, Schedule breaks & Treats
Self-discipline does not mean your new regimen needs to be changed completely. You do need to give yourself some give and take and be aware that often failures, disappointments happen and you will learn to grow. While practicing self-control, schedule specific breaks, treats, and rewards for yourself this could be the form or ME time, listening to favourite music, ensure giving back to yourself! (Not necessarily in the form of food)
- Eat regularly and healthily
We all have a social life so going out for dinner, Birthdays, Weddings, Easter, Christmas the list goes there is always going to be an event on. It's about self-control and choosing the healthy choices"" this will not only benefit you in the longer turn and the longevity to live life to the fullest. When you're hungry, your ability to concentrate suffers as your brain is not functioning to its highest potential.
Hunger makes it difficult to focus on the tasks at hand, not to mention making you grumpy and pessimistic. You are much more likely to have a weakened sense of self control in all areas of our life - diet, exercise, work, relationships… you name it. Aim is to have 5-6 small meals throughout the day and keep accountable using VVT to keep track.
