Motivation vs Discipline

Why do some people succeed with their health and fitness goals when others fail?

We generally all have similar goals – get leaner, stronger, fitter. We generally all have enough motivation – be healthier, happier, more energy, play with the kids, etc.

So, if the reason for embarking on a health and fitness journey is strong enough for all of us, and the goal or outcome is similar to each other, then what is the separator?

The answer lies in the ability to follow the process day in day out. We know what works, we know eating an apple is healthy and eating a chocolate bar is unhealthy. We know exercise is good for us and we know being completely sedentary is unhealthy. We know going to bed earlier will benefit us and we know binge watching tv late at night will hinder our recovery and energy the next day.

We have our goals, we know what we need to do (for the most part), we have motivation to start the journey. What’s the missing ingredient?

DISCIPLINE.

Sorry, no magic pill or silver bullet. What you need to accept is that your motivation won’t last. It will start strong and then fade. It’ll come in waves. It’ll be inconsistent. But what yields long last results is CONSISTENT actions and habits.

The way we get consistency is by being disciplined with our daily and weekly habits. Do what you know you need to do each day, not what you want to do.

You won’t always be motivated to do it, but if you hold yourself to account and carry out those little one percenters each day you’ll stack up the little wins, feel accomplished, start seeing results (which funnily enough boosts motivation), and make long lasting change to your health and wellness.

So, set your goals, set an action plan to achieve those goals, and then start small each day by ticking one thing off that’ll move you forward. Your future self will thank you.
