Food cravings can be a major obstacle when trying to maintain a healthy diet and achieve fitness goals. Understanding why we experience food cravings and how to overcome them is key to achieving success on our fitness journey.

What Are Food Cravings?

Food cravings are intense desires for specific types of food that can be difficult to resist. These cravings are often triggered by a range of factors, including emotions, stress, boredom, and even nutrient deficiencies. Some common cravings include sweet, salty, or fatty foods, as well as foods high in carbohydrates or caffeine.

Food Cravings and What They Mean

There are several reasons why people experience food cravings. One reason is psychological factors, such as stress, boredom, or emotions. When we feel stressed or anxious, for example, we may turn to food as a form of comfort or distraction. Similarly, when we are bored, we may seek out food as a form of entertainment.

Another reason for food cravings is nutrient deficiencies. Our bodies require a range of vitamins and minerals to function properly, and when we are lacking in these nutrients, our bodies may send signals for us to consume specific types of food. For example, a craving for chocolate may indicate a magnesium deficiency, while a craving for salty foods may indicate a sodium deficiency.

How to Stop Food Cravings

While food cravings can be difficult to resist, there are several strategies you can use to help overcome them.

  1. Drink Water: Dehydration can sometimes be mistaken for hunger, so drinking a glass of water when you feel a craving coming on may help alleviate it.
  2. Eat Balanced Meals: Eating balanced meals that contain a mix of protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats can help prevent cravings from occurring in the first place.
  3. Identify Triggers: If you notice that certain emotions or situations trigger your cravings, try to identify them and find alternative ways to cope, such as exercise or meditation.
  4. Get Enough Sleep: Lack of sleep can disrupt hormones that regulate appetite and increase the likelihood of cravings, so aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night. Read on for more information on how sleep impacts appetite here.
  5. Practice Mindful Eating: When you do indulge in a craving, try to eat mindfully by paying attention to your senses and savouring each bite. This can help you feel more satisfied and reduce the likelihood of overeating.

How to Ignore Food Cravings

If you find yourself experiencing a strong craving that you want to ignore, there are several strategies you can use.

  1. Distract Yourself: Engage in a distracting activity, such as going for a walk or calling a friend, to take your mind off of the craving.
  2. Delay Gratification: Tell yourself that you can have the food you are craving, but only after you have completed a specific task, such as going for a workout or finishing a work project.
  3. Practice Self-Care: Take care of yourself by getting enough sleep, managing stress, and engaging in activities that bring you joy. When you are feeling fulfilled in other areas of your life, you may be less likely to experience food cravings.

Food Cravings and What They Mean

Food cravings can sometimes be a sign that your body is lacking certain nutrients. If you experience frequent cravings, it may be worth taking a closer look at your diet to ensure that you are getting all the vitamins and minerals your body needs. For example, if you are craving chocolate, it may be a sign that you are low in magnesium, while a craving for red meat may indicate a need for iron.
