It's a common misconception, eat healthy, cut out all junk foods and you are guaranteed to lose weight. I've heard many people say, "I eat healthy, I hardly have any junk food so I'm not sure why I can't lose weight". Eating healthy is important however over consuming even on healthy foods doesn't exempt you from weight gain. Regardless of whether it's a healthy option or not the number of calories in 1 gram are going to be the same.

What does that mean?

There are 4 calories in every 1 gram of carbohydrate regardless of whether it's a healthy food or a junk food
There are 9 calories in every 1 gram of fat regardless if it's a healthy food or a junk food

Exceeding your calorie requirements by over consuming with any type of carb or fat food choice can lead to weight gain

For example

If you were to consume 20 grams of carbs from an apple it would equal 80 calories.
If you were to consume 20 grams of carbs from sugar it would equal 80 calories.
20 x 4 = 80

If you were to consume 20 grams of fat from flaxseed oil it would equal 180 calories.
If you were to consume 20 grams of fat from butter it would equal 180 calories.
20 x 9 = 180

A diet rich in healthy foods will be better for your health as you will consume more vitamins, minerals and fibre and in the case above the apple is going to be a better choice over the sugar as will the flaxseed oil over the butter. However, it's important to be aware of the energy in food so you can make the best choices to suit your situations and to make sure you don't over consume even when you think you're doing a good thing by choosing a healthy option.

Now you don't need to sit there and calculate the calories in every meal you eat, that would drive anyone mad. The easiest way to ensure you eat the right amount of food is by using your food diary on Vision Virtual Training. Here you will be able to conveniently track your intake and ensure you hit your macros. Your macros are your set carbs, fats and proteins specific to you and your goal.

Use your food diary on Vision Virtual Training to:

Track your food intake and hit your macronutrient targets

Plan your meals ahead of time

Adjust your meals to fit in foods you like

See if you need to make any adjustments to over or under eating

Make sure you're eating enough for the amount of training you're doing

Eat out at restaurants and cafe's by tracking your intake via the VVT app. An estimate is better than not tracking at all

Help educate yourself and understand more about nutrition to ensure long-term success

Take control of your eating habits

Ensure you achieve your goal
