I'm sure you've experienced bouts of motivation in the past that fire you up and propel you at an astronomical pace towards achieving a specific task or goal. And doesn't it feel great when you're in that state of flow and powering through your checklist on your way to success.

Wouldn't it be even greater if we could harness that energy and motivation consistently through our days for our work life, home life and of course our Health & Fitness goals.

Well I'm here to tell you that you can. But first we need to understand what actually motivates us day to day and which motivator is more powerful.

The two human motivators are MOVING TOWARDS PLEASURE and AVOIDING PAIN. Simple really, you want to look great on your wedding day (moving towards pleasure), and you don't want to look overweight and flabby on your wedding day (avoiding pain).

The next step is to understand that these two human motivators illicit an emotion or set of emotions. Moving towards pleasure may trigger emotions such as happiness, pride, accomplishment, joy, excitement, etc. Avoiding pain may trigger embarrassment, shame, low self-worth or confidence, feeling of failure, etc.

Our emotions are responsible for 100% of the decisions we make, as scientifically proven through our decision making part of the brain (limbic system). So which emotions are more motivating for us humans? You guessed it, the not so nice ones - AVOIDING PAIN.

Someone will be more motivated to work hard towards a goal and make certain sacrifices as they don't want to look fat and out of shape at their wedding, as oppose to looking nice on their wedding day.

So, to ensure you have success with your Health & Fitness goals (and in other areas of your life) make sure you know what PAIN you're AVOIDING and understand it's ok to remind yourself of this once in a while to keep your motivation levels high. This isn't easy for some people and may take a while to figure out what you're REALLY avoiding and what REALLY makes you tick, be honest with yourself though and you'll feel that extra motivation kicks in and spur you onto success.
