Summer is here! This is a great time of the year to spend with loved ones. Great food, great drinks and fantastic company.

The key is to ensure that you control your weight over the festivities of summer without sacrificing enjoyment.

Some challenging events come up that are difficult to get around;

  • Christmas Parties
  • Family get togethers
  • Our children's formals and end of year celebrations
  • New Years parties
  • Boxing Day parties

According to a University of Wollongong study, the average female puts on 2.2Kgs over the Christmas/New Years period, with the average male putting on 3.4Kgs. I am sure that we can all relate to these statistics.

Be responsible with your goal setting over this time. According to the stats, if you gain 1kg you have done awesome!

These are the top tips to consider during this time;

  • Use 'diet' soft drinks when mixing with alcohol
  • Have a glass of water between drinks to ensure that you are not trying to satisfy de-hydration
  • Incorporate healthy summer fruits such as
    • Watermelon, Mango's, Strawberry's, Cherrys, Grapes, Peaches, Nectarines, Plums, Kiwi Fruit, Oranges.
  • Have Christmas or New Year lunch at your place. That way you control what's on the table, there are some delicious healthy recipes available on Vision Virtual Training. Use them to your advantage.
  • Stick to protein based foods and fruits.
  • Set a day during the break that you CAN cheat. Enjoy the bad stuff. However, on the other days make conscious decisions to make great food choices within your macros.

Just because it's Christmas doesn't mean we can undo all of the great results we have acheived up to this point.

If you do indulge during the break then go for a long walk the next morning. Hopefully you have a little more time over the break, the walk will be a great feel gppd sensation starting each day with an endorphin release.

The other aspect to consider is the loss of motivation during this time of year. Let's be honest. It has generally been a long year for us all. It's time to rejuvenate and enjoy a well-earned rest from work. Use this time to really have a think about what you would like to achieve in the coming year, the key to motivation is achieving small goals consistently.

Set some small achievable goals over the break and you will stay motivated.
