Inflammation is the body's immediate response to tissue damage, germs, physical injury, and dangerous chemicals. The tissue around the ankle joint, for example, becomes inflamed following a common sprain. Chronic inflammation -  an important risk factor of cardiovascular disease, heart attack and stroke - results from chronic metabolite stress due to obesity, insulin resistance, high blood pressure and cigarette smoking.

A study led my Zhi Yu from Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston that analysed nut consumption in 5,013 people from the Nurse's Health Study and Health Professional Follow Up Study found that higher nut consumption was linked to reduced whole-body inflammation, as measured by C-reactive protein.

Replacing three servings of meat per week with three servings of nuts will reduce whole-body inflammation.
